William and Mary college, in Williiamsburg Virginia, invited Adam Werbach to speak as part of their DOT Kickoff. The school has taken Sustainability personally and engaged faculty and students to pick a DOT. Adam Werbach and the audience were equally inspired by the actions already taken (7oo+ DOTS on Campus) and by the journey ahead. Adam challenged the school to lead the way to a billion.

William and Mary is the first university to launch DOT on Campus

The folks at Saatchi X in Arkansas understand that a little sun shine, a clothesline and a little patience can save money and reduce ones climate footprint.

Am I a leader or a follower? In this case I’m both. Recently, I was
inspired by one of my co-workers when I heard she installed a
clothesline. Well, actually I laughed at first, but when I saw my
electric bill for July, I thought back to my co-worker’s comment about
the savings her family realized by using a clothesline. With a family
of six, our dryer is constantly in use and our electric bill made that
very apparent. So, following in the footsteps of my eco-friendly and
financially-savvy co-worker, I proudly installed the Patterson Family
clothesline. As of two weeks ago, our family now hangs all of our
laundry on the clothesline. Our 16-year old, Mason, has gladly accepted
responsibility for hanging the clothes, while the responsibility of
taking the clothes down and folding rotates among the rest of the
family. Our family was the first in our Bentonville neighborhood to
install a clothesline, but as of last night, I think I may be leading a
movement - at least in our neighborhood. I caught a glance of our
neighbor’s husband installing their backyard clothesline. Can’t wait to
see next month’s electric bill!

An efficient fan powered drying rack that allows me to handwash instead
of drycleaning (which I hardly ever do now.). Energy saving and no
chemicals!

I hang dry clothes, because it was always done that way until the last
century. Maybe it’s a little “Theodore Kaczynski” like, because of the
hate for technology where it’s not needed.

I’m Caroline McHugh, a rising sophomore at Harvard.  I have had the wonderful opportunity to intern with Saatchi and Saatchi with a focus on environmental sustainability and carbon this summer.  I am nearing the end of my six weeks here in New York, and I’ve assembled a slideshow to document my experiences.  See the top left corner for the story, you can make one up on your own if you prefer.

Sorry for the lame music, I like to think that the original music (that YouTube couldn’t play) would have made it a little more interesting.

And lest you think that all I did was gallivant around Europe, rest assured that there was a significant amount of thinking involved too!  In fact I learned from about 1000 respondents to my survey that Saatchi employees are ready for the True Blue journey.  So let’s go!  I hope to be back to help you all soon!

Sustainable Commuting

One of the entries into our ‘Saatchi BLUE NZ pic and vid competion’ - snap or film yourself doing something BLUE.

Matt commutes to the office in Wellington on his electric skateboard - it has a range of about 12Kms before it needs to be charged up again and can reach speeds of 30km.

Happy For My Dinner Tonight!

Happy For My Dinner Tonight!

June 22nd marked the first day Team One employees began participating in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). What’s CSA you say? It’s the relationship between a local farm and those that eat the food produced. Most consumers not only are unaware of where their food comes from, but who is growing it and how it is produced. A CSA seeks to end our disconnection from the farmer and the land that sustains us. Joining a CSA helps to continue the ancient practices of land stewardship, while at the same time supporting local farmers.

Every Wednesday, the South Central Farmer’s Cooperative rolls up to our loading dock and delivers local produce boxes for 20 employees. We rush down to the mailroom to see what’s inside our boxes (always a surprise), and many of us have been cooking and sharing both food and recipes throughout the week. Not only are we supporting a local farming initiative, we’re supporting each other and growing our own community of sharing and fun around a sustainable practice.

Team One CSA Champs!

This video is a collection of  things that I have seen in the past few weeks. The pictures stop after three minutes, but the song continues. The song is called سميَ by محمد عبدو.

My name is Tik Root. I am a student at Middlebury College in VT and I am here with Saatchi & Saatchi in Riyadh to research the meaning that the word “sustainability” has in this part of the world. I wanted to come to Saudi Arabia in order to put to the test the numerous stereotypes and pre conceived notions that are floating around the US about the KSA. So far, the journey has been immensely fascinating.

To my excitement, the Saudi’s are doing some really COOL things to prepare them selves for a sustainable future. For example, they are trying to utilize their vast silicone resources for the production of solar cells, and they are trying to make it cheaper to convert crude oil into hydrogen (which is apparently possible). Overall the prospects for a sustainable Saudi future are much brighter than I ever imagined, but there is still a long way to go.

Another goal for the trip is to introduce Saatchi’s True Blue movement to the Riyadh office. We are already on our way to the goal of 100% DOT registration, even before having the first official True Blue discussion!!

Check back for updates, or e-mail me in the meantime.

My introduction post is an invitation to rally for support of the Clean Energy Bill being milled over by the House Means and Ways Committee, which will then be presented to the House of Representatives for a vote June 22. It has to pass and it has to have everything in it to make the nation switch to Clean Energy. Please, please come support the bill to make the U.S. a leader of clean energy. We need to generate as much attention to this issue as possible.

Wednesday, June 17, 6 pm
163 W 125th St, NY, NY 10027

“Local Manhattan residents will hold a clean energy rally outside Rep. Rangel’s office to support Rangel in doing everything he can to  strengthen the clean energy jobs bill, which is going to be voted on in the house the week of June 22nd.”

Hope to see you there.

Cape Town Saatchi & Saatchi’s interpretation of  DOT (Do one thing) - the options are endless.  We have placed this DOT in reception and it reminds us daily  how we can make a difference but  just doing one thing differently.
